Should you rent or buy?
Clearly not everyone is qualified to buy a home. In fact, prior to making the decision to purchase a home, many people have not yet fully evaluated all of the costs associated with becoming a home owner. In addition to the initial down payment and closing costs there are several other costs to budget for, such as:
- Homeowner's Insurance
- Home repairs, including appliances, air conditioning, furnace, roof
- Property taxes
- Utility bills, electrical, gas, water, sewer, garbage, telephone, internet
- Lawn care
- Pest control
- Security system
- Remodeling
- Association or membership dues
- Furniture
Even if you are very handy, dealing with broken appliances, a leaky roof or a fallen tree can be a huge nightmare. The way to avoid this is to establish a savings account dedicated to the unforeseen expenses. Being prepared and educated can make homeownership a wonderful experience.
