Moving Checklist
- You will need to decide whether or not you would like to use a moving company. If you have decided to use a moving company's services, get estimates from several different companies.
- You may decide to move yourself. Obtain truck rental pricing from a few different rental agencies. Make arrangements with some friends to help with the move!
- Consider the floor plan in your new home. Make a rough floor plan diagram to determine the placement of your furniture and appliances. This will also give you insight as to whether or not you will need to purchase additional furniture or downsize your current amount.
- Begin to get rid of clutter. Storage areas like garages, closets, and basements may have many articles that may not be necessary to move.
- Create a file that will contain all of your documents required for moving. Have estimates, receipts, etc. available for easy access.
- Get in touch with schools and make transfers of school records.
- Make sure you home is move-in ready. Contact any services for repairs, painting, plumbing, and carpentry. Any necessary services must be performed so your new home will be ready for your family to move in.
- Make arrangements for the locks to be changed on your new home.
6 weeks until you move . . .
- You will need to make sure your mail will reach your new address. Obtain and fill out change-of-address cards. These can be found at your local post office.
- You may want to consider signing up to receive the local newspaper of your new hometown to learn more about what's going on in the community.
- If you will need additional storage, you will need to make arrangements at this time.
- Have all medical records accessible to present to your new healthcare provider.
- You can ask your current doctor to refer a healthcare provider in your new area.
- Anything of great value should be appraised. (articles such as art, or antiques)
- All closets and drawers should be cleaned at this time.
- Most food and cleaning supplies cannot be moved. Try to use what is left in order to be less wasteful.
